On July 8, the Royal College of Paramedics, the professional body for paramedics and the ambulance profession in the UK will come together with more than 160 global paramedic associations, higher education institutions and affiliated organisations to highlight the different ways paramedics are advancing practice - from improving patient care and embracing digital technologies, to demonstrating organisational, service and clinical integration.
Across the globe, paramedics are pushing the boundaries of research, leading the way in education, showcasing their clinical versatility, adapting to evolving demands and are at the forefront of an integrated workforce focused on providing better and more joined up person-centred care.
Through innovation and integration, paramedics are improving access to healthcare and reducing inequalities, increasing workforce wellbeing and resilience, supporting people with complex or specific needs and driving local and national knowledge development.
Chief Executive of the Royal College of Paramedics, Tracy Nicholls OBE said: “On International Paramedics Day, we come together to celebrate a profession that serves communities with skill, professionalism, compassion and unwavering commitment. Over the past five years, we’ve grown this initiative to more than 160 partners across 40 countries—reflecting the strength and diversity of global paramedicine as a true community of practice. I am incredibly proud that we have helped create a moment of worldwide recognition for the vital work paramedics do every single day that remains centred on the benefit to society.”
The College of Paramedics first launched International Paramedics Day in 2022. Since then, the number of UK and global partners that have pledged their support to the campaign has grown rapidly, and the vital work of paramedics is now recognised, talked about and celebrated in over 40 countries worldwide.
International Paramedics Day takes place every year on July 8 because this marks the anniversary of the birth of Dominique Jean Larrey, the French military doctor who became Napoleon Bonaparte’s chief surgeon of the Grand Armee and the man often referred to as the 'father of modern-day ambulance services.'
