Elderly Plymouth residents celebrate the King's official birthday

While thousands of spectators lined the streets of London for the Trooping of the Colour ceremony to mark King Charles III’s official birthday, residents of Plymouth dementia care home Butterfly Lodge marked the occasion with their own special garden party.

Staff, residents and family members have been busy sprucing up the home’s garden, inspired by the efforts of Alan Jones and wife Ann who is a resident of Butterfly Lodge.

Deputy manager, Sarah McCaffrey, said: “Ann and Alan have been avid gardeners their whole lives and have been enjoying spending time in our garden planting new flowers and shrubs ahead of this special occasion.

“And Alan has been helping staff paint the benches in lovely pastel colours, which we appreciated very much.

“We decked the lounge and garden out with patriotic bunting and flags and were delighted to welcome many of our residents’ family members and friends to join us for a celebratory buffet lunch.

“Special thanks must go to resident’s daughter Michelle Adam, who brought along the most beautiful trifle, as well as our terrific kitchen team who laid on an amazing spread.

“Before and after the meal, local singer Debbie Holmes led a group singalong and a great time was had by all.”

Butterfly Lodge is run by award-winning dementia care provider Camelot Care, who also run Deer Park Nursing Home in Holsworthy, and three further homes in Somerset.
