Community invited to 'Glimmer of Light' remembrance event for World Suicide Prevention Day
People across Bristol and the surrounding area are invited to come together for an evening of remembrance, hope and reflection at ‘Glimmer of Light’, a special event marking World Suicide Prevention Day.
Hosted by local charity Sunflowers Suicide Support the event will take place at Bristol Memorial Woodlands on Sunday 13 September. The evening is free to attendees and offers a peaceful space for anyone affected by suicide to remember loved ones, find comfort in the company of others and stand together to help break the stigma surrounding suicide.
As the sun sets over the woodland, attendees will gather in quiet reflection before lighting individual lanterns, creating a powerful display of hope and remembrance. The lanterns symbolise a shared commitment to shining a light on suicide prevention and ensuring no one faces grief or difficult thoughts alone.
The event is open to everyone, whether they have experienced bereavement through suicide, are supporting someone affected, or simply wish to show solidarity and raise awareness of the importance of suicide prevention.
Children are welcome to attend, although organisers ask parents and carers to be mindful that the evening is designed to open conversations around suicide and may be emotional.
Harriett Matthews, engagement and communications officer at Sunflowers Suicide Support, said: "World Suicide Prevention Day is an opportunity to remember those we've lost, support those who are grieving and remind people that help is available. Glimmer of Light is about creating a safe, compassionate space where people can come together, reflect and find comfort in knowing they are not alone."
The event will take place at Bristol Memorial Woodlands, providing a tranquil natural setting for reflection and remembrance.
Chris Baker, founder of Bristol Memorial Woodlands, said: “We have hosted Sunflowers’ flagship event Glimmer of Light several times now. Not only is it a fantastic and incredibly important charity to support, the event itself is always a beautiful combination of poignant remembrance and hope for the future.”
Attendance is free, but advance registration is essential. As parking is limited, everyone attending is asked to register individually and indicate how many vehicles will be brought to the site.
Glimmer of Light is part of Sunflowers Suicide Support’s ongoing mission to raise awareness, break down stigma, and provide hope and healing to those impacted by suicide. The Gloucestershire-based charity offers training, awareness initiatives, and tailored support for individuals and families navigating grief after suicide.
Bristol Memorial Woodlands is a 100-acre resting place located near Thornbury, just 15 minutes from Cribbs Causeway. Offering a unique approach to funerals and memorial events, the woodlands are also open to the public for walks.
