Outdoor spaces revealed at student development Timber Yard

The developers behind a major new purpose-built student accommodation complex have revealed what the outdoor space will look like when the project opens in Summer 2026.

Visuals released by Studio Hive, showcase Timber Yard’s south-facing courtyard and landscaped gardens beside Bristol’s historic Feeder Canal.

Once complete Timber Yard will deliver more than 700 studios and ensuite rooms alongside a wide range of shared amenities designed to support student wellbeing, social life and academic success.

The courtyard and landscaped gardens will sit at the centre of the scheme and cover three quarters of an acre. Positioned between the three Timber Yard buildings, the courtyard has been designed as a social hub where students can relax, meet friends or take a break between study sessions.

Seating areas and benches will be arranged throughout the landscaped gardens, creating welcoming places for residents to spend time outdoors while remaining in the heart of the development.

The courtyard will also include dedicated outdoor fitness equipment, allowing students to stay active without leaving the scheme. The outdoor gym will complement Timber Yard’s wider wellness offering, which also includes a fully equipped indoor gym and exercise studio.

Additional activity space within the courtyard will feature a basketball area and social games area, providing opportunities for informal sport, exercise and social interaction.

One of Timber Yard’s most distinctive features is its location alongside the historic Feeder Canal, which runs along the edge of the site. Canal-side pathways, seating areas and green spaces will allow residents to enjoy waterside views and spend time outdoors in a quieter setting while still being close to the city centre and just 10-minutes from the University of Bristol’s new Temple Quarter Enterprise Campus.

The outdoor areas compliment the 25 dedicated indoor amenity spaces planned across the development. Residents will also have access to games rooms, a cinema room with sofas on tiered steps, a fully equipped gym and exercise studio, karaoke and card rooms, study areas and workspaces, a roof terrace with city views, private dining rooms and multiple lounges and social spaces designed to support both academic life and community living.

Timber Yard is located close to the University of Bristol’s new campus and Temple Meads Train Station and is expected to become one of the city’s most significant new student accommodation developments.

Josh Picton, general manager at Timber Yard, said: “Timber Yard has been designed to create a vibrant student community with spaces that support both wellbeing and social life. The outdoor courtyard and canal-side areas will give residents somewhere to relax, stay active and spend time with friends, all within a unique waterside setting. These new CGI images give a great sense of how the development will bring students together in a welcoming environment when it opens later this year.”

Students are already able to reserve rooms for the 2026/2027 academic year ahead of the development opening in summer 2026.
