Bristol artist Richt announced for Timber Yard development
The team behind the highly anticipated Timber Yard student accommodation development has announced that acclaimed Bristol artist Richt will be creating a series of bold and inspiring artworks across the site, transforming the development into a vibrant cultural landmark for students.
Currently under construction, Timber Yard is set to become one of Bristol’s most distinctive student living destinations, just 10 minutes from the University of Bristol’s new Temple Quarter Enterprise Campus.
The development has commissioned Richt to deliver an ambitious and impactful programme of internal and external murals, large-scale installations and sculptural works that will be woven throughout the student accommodation buildings and its generous outdoor spaces.
Richt is due to start work shortly, creating multiple striking pieces including a dramatic two-storey murals designed to act as a visual centrepieces and defining features of the development.
Known for his bold use of colour, Richt brings a distinctive vision that will create something unique for Timber Yard’s student residents, who will live, work and play in the space.
Speaking about the commission, Richt said: “Much of my recent work explores ‘balance’, how spaces are inhabited physically and psychologically. The opportunity to direct a vision for this project with Timber Yard has been an exciting challenge.
“The work focuses largely on spherical forms in moments of transition and transformation, juxtaposing organic shapes with symbolic icons such as the chess pawn, the strategic underdog navigating a complex system. This reflection on ‘power dynamics’ for new students entering a city like Bristol, felt like a playful yet relevant introduction.”
Mark Jones, project director at Studio Hive, the developers behind Timber Yard, said: “Timber Yard’s twenty-five communal amenities are what really sets it apart from other student accommodation settings in Bristol and so we wanted to make the very most of those spaces and give the site real identity and personality.”
Josh Picton, general manager of Timber Yard, said: “Working with an artist like Richt, who knows and loves Bristol culture, ensures the development will celebrate Bristol, the city in which these students will spend some of the most important years of their life, as well as reflecting Timber Yard’s unique identity.”
The development is scheduled for completion in Summer 2026 with Richt’s installations forming a key part of the final build phase.
Timber Yard offers quality accommodation with double beds as standard and large format windows.
With 25 different internal amenity spaces in addition to, a roof garden, an external gym area, a basket ball area, top terrace, canal side location and far-reaching views, it offers the best of all worlds.
