Bristol welcomes Year of the Horse as it marks 25 years of ties with Guangzhou
Bristol is gearing up to celebrate the Chinese New Year with a spectacular banquet marking the 25th anniversary of the city’s partnership with the city of Guangzhou.
The event, hosted by Bristol & West of England China Bureau, will welcome the Year of the Horse at Wong’s Restaurant in Denmark Street on Thursday, 26th February.
The banquet, which begins at 6pm, will feature authentic cuisine and a traditional lion dance performance.
Dianne Francombe OBE, chair of the China Bureau, says the event offers a chance to connect and strengthen ties between Bristol and China.
“This year’s celebration is particularly special as it marks 25 years of the Bristol-Guangzhou partnership and reminds us of the creativity, friendship and shared opportunities that come from strong international connections,” she says.
“It’s a chance to reflect on the achievements of the past, celebrate our vibrant Chinese community, and look forward to a year of creativity, growth and collaboration. We hope this event will inspire continued collaboration and cultural exchange throughout the year.”
The celebrations include guest of honour Councillor Henry Michallat, Lord Mayor of Bristol, alongside members of the local Chinese community, business leaders and representatives from the Chinese Students’ Associations at Bristol’s two universities.
“The Lunar New Year is a time for community, connection and optimism,” added Dianne Francombe.
“True dialogue and lasting friendships are built through collaboration. Events like this give us the chance to engage meaningfully, share ideas and strengthen the bonds between Bristol and our partners in China.”
