'Incredibly Moving’ Gathering Held in Memory of Loved Ones

The annual Glimmer of Light event, organised by Sunflowers Suicide Support and hosted at Bristol Memorial Woodlands, was described as “incredibly moving” after more than 40 people braved torrential rain and stormy weather to come together in remembrance of loved ones lost to suicide.

This year’s event provided a safe and reflective space for families and individuals to gather in solidarity, share conversation and honour the lives of those lost.

Guests were welcomed in the Woodlands’ Georgian Reception Rooms before moving into the Chapel for the candlelight service where each family lit a candle in memory of their loved one.

Chloe Webb, operations manager at Sunflowers Suicide Support, said: “Despite the storm outside, the atmosphere inside was filled with warmth and togetherness.

“Glimmer of Light offers people a quiet and supportive space to remember, to share and to feel less alone in their thoughts. We are so grateful to the families who joined us and to everyone who helped make the evening possible.”

Although the evening was scheduled to end at 8pm, many guests chose to stay longer, reflecting the sense of connection and community created by the event.

Mireille Hayden, grief and bereavement expert at Bristol Memorial Woodlands, said: “The storm outside felt grounding as families gathered in the Chapel to light candles for their loved ones.

“It was incredibly moving to witness the strength of community and the comfort found in coming together to remember and to heal. The fact that no one wanted to leave speaks volumes about how meaningful the evening was.”

Glimmer of Light is part of Sunflowers Suicide Support’s ongoing mission to raise awareness, break down stigma, and provide hope and healing to those impacted by suicide. The Gloucestershire-based charity offers training, awareness initiatives, and tailored support for individuals and families navigating grief after suicide.

Bristol Memorial Woodlands is a 100-acre resting place located near Thornbury, just 15 minutes from Cribbs Causeway. Offering a unique approach to funerals and memorial events, the woodlands are also open to the public for walks.
