Bringing the past to life
Residents at Chestnut Lodge care home in Yeovil enjoyed a nostalgic journey back in time at a lively session featuring characters and memories from the rural life of days gone by.
The event, led by Jan Millward of Rural Reminiscences, used vintage memorabilia, traditional costumes, and rhythmic poetry to engage the senses and unlock treasured memories.
The ‘cast’ included farmers, milkmaids, and shepherds including a replica cow that helped recreate the atmosphere of country life for the residents.
“These reminiscence sessions are really meaningful for us here,” said Chestnut Lodge’s activities coordinator,” Gary Shackle.
“They loved trying on the pinnies and mop caps Jan brought with her, which got everyone smiling and chatting about their own memories of rural life.
“Jan also shared some of her wonderfully funny poems about life in the past, which the residents really related to and found very entertaining.
“They don’t just spark memories; they bring moments of genuine joy, laughter, and connection, which are so important for people living with dementia.
“Seeing people light up as familiar objects and stories from their past come alive reminds us of the power of shared memories.
“Sessions like this help ease confusion or loneliness, getting people chatting and lifting everyone’s spirits.”
Rural Reminiscences’ visit is part of a full and varied programme of activities provided at the Hendford Hill, Yeovil-based home.
