Bristol charity St Peter’s Hospice is expanding its Community Hub programme with the launch of a new and free drop-in service in Portishead, offering advice, information and support for anyone affected by a life-limiting illness.
The new Community Hub will take place at The Beacon Hub, attached to Portishead Methodist Church, every Wednesday from 2:00pm to 4:00pm. The service is open to all adults, regardless of condition, religion or beliefs, and provides a welcoming space where people can access support without the need for an appointment.
The launch follows the opening of the first Community Hub last year and provides patients in North Somerset with a convenient drop-in service as part of the charity’s aim to provide earlier support to people receiving end-of-life care.
Led by the St Peter’s Hospice community team, the Hub offers a warm and friendly environment where patients, carers, family members and friends can come together for support, guidance and connection. Whether someone is adjusting to a diagnosis, caring for a loved one or coping with bereavement, the Hub provides a safe space to talk, share experiences and access practical help.
Chris Benson, Director of Clinical Services and Family Support at St Peter’s Hospice, said: “Visitors are encouraged to come as they are, stay as long as they need and take part in whatever feels right for them. The Hub is designed to be a place of connection and community, helping people feel less alone during challenging times.
“Support available at the Hub includes emotional support from people who understand what individuals may be going through, practical information about accessing hospice services, planning ahead and managing day-to-day life, as well as opportunities to connect with others facing similar experiences through peer support.
“Currently we only reach about a third of those needing end-of-life care, and we want to do more.”
Jill, who has attended a community hub session, said: “I was thrilled to hear St Peter’s was coming to my community. Knowing such amazing support is right on our doorstep is incredible and being greeted by a friendly face made me feel instantly at ease.”
Anyone affected by a life-limiting illness is welcome to attend either Community Hub. No booking is required and there is no charge to access the service.
