Safety first for award winners FHOSS

Weston-super-Mare-based safety business FHOSS has been named Health, Safety & Wellbeing award winner in the Constructing Excellence Awards South West 2023.

FHOSS, in partnership with BAM Construction LTD, won the award for its illuminated safety walkway on the construction site of the new Elm Park School in Winterbourne, Bristol.

The firm’s patent-pending technology uses focused beams of light and traffic lights to control the movement of people and vehicles on site, as well as a magnetic locking gate to ensure that pedestrians are entirely segregated from machinery and equipment.

Hailed by judges at the annual award as a ‘true collaboration between a contractor and industry provider’, FHOSS was described as a ‘worthy winner in a very high-quality field’.

They said the fact that there is rapid uptake of the technology is proof of its value. And the continued development of it, is really exciting.

Andrew Kimitri, CEO of FHOSS, said the award honoured the work of the entire team and all the work put into creating a groundbreaking safety system.

“This award reaffirms our dedication to the highest safety standard and motivates us to continue saving lives and pushing the envelope in onsite pedestrian safety,” he said.

“Our thanks to Kurt Williams at BAM Construction, whose vigilant passion for proactive onsite safety measures helped to ensure that this project was a resounding success.”

Kurt Williams, senior site manager for BAM Construction Greater Bristol area and project lead at Elm Park, said FHOSS provided a solution to one of the high-risk pinch points on the site.

“We’ve got quite a lot of traffic, people and visitors and we wanted to be able to control that a bit better and take out the risk with the illuminated crossing points,” he said.

“It uses as a combination of audio, visual and mechanical technology to control the traffic and pedestrians as well, whereby taking out the risk.

“It also eliminates the need to have a banksman constantly on standby or in place to control people and plant.

“Safety is a huge concern in the construction industry, but it is particularly important to BAM, and we are always looking for ways to innovate and raise the bar, and this technology does exactly that.”

The new £11million Elm Park School in Winterbourne is set to replace existing buildings over two phases and provide 210 places for local children.

The Constructing Excellence Awards South West 2023 were held at Bristol Aerospace and are one of the most prominent accolades in the South West’s built environment.

FHOSS who have operations in the UK, North America, and Australia, produces a range of high performance, illuminated safety products for numerous industries and applications.

Andrew Glen, Sales and Safety Specialist for FHOSS, said: “The awards evening was a great success and we’re very proud to see that real partnerships which keep people safe are not only viable, but are recognised and appreciated by fellow industry leaders.”
