EVENT: A-list psychotherapist and bereavement counsellor Julia Samuel MBE

A-list psychotherapist and bereavement counsellor Julia Samuel MBE will lead discussions at Bristol Memorial Woodlands to highlight how to cope with grief.

The best-selling author and friend of Diana, Princess of Wales, will talk about how important it is that people look after themselves and one another in grief as the country comes to terms with the loss of Queen Elizabeth II.

The free event on Thursday September 29 at 6pm will include discussions on how we heal from loss, what do people need when they are facing loss? What helps them adapt to loss? What gets in the way? How can professionals? friends and family help?

Julia Samuel, Founder Patron of the charity Child Bereavement UK, will be joined by health psychologist and founder of Gentle Dusk, Mireille Hayden.

As well as discussions the event at the Memorial Woodlands, near Alveston, will review stories of loss in Julia Samuel’s best-selling books: Grief Works and Every Family Has A Story. Bristol independent bookshop Max Minerva will sell copies for signing.

Mireille Haydon said: “The event was planned long before the death of Her Majesty the Queen but it will take on extra significance now as Julia Samuel can support us all as individuals and professionals to help each other understand and work through grief.”

Julia Samuel said: “Often in families, if someone has a potentially life-limiting illness, or is nearing the end of life, it isn’t discussed. People imagine that if they don’t think or talk about their death, or the death of someone they love, then somehow it’s not going to happen. It’s because we fear what we don’t know and can’t control.

“We will look at ways that we can have those discussions with all ages. It can be specially frightening for children of all ages if adults around them are grieving.”

The event will start at 6pm with drinks and nibbles. Julia Samuel will lead discussion from 6:30pm. At the end of the evening, audience members will be invited to pose questions.

Attendance is free but registration should be made through Eventbrite with donations to Cruse Bereavement Bristol – the donations will go towards training more bereavement support volunteers in Bristol and surrounding area.
